The Birth of Heavy Metal

Imagine recording an entire album in just twelve hours. That's exactly what Black Sabbath did with their self-titled debut, "Black Sabbath." Back in November 1969, Black Sabbath entered Regent Sounds Studios in London to record their first album. It was a whirlwind session, completed in a single day. But before those twelve hours, the band had already laid down the single 'Evil Woman' and its B-si Black Sabbath — Black Sabbath

Aphex Twin · Selected Ambient Works 85–92

Richard D. James recorded Selected Ambient Works 85–92 using homemade equipment onto a damaged cassette, giving the album its signature lo-fi quality. He sampled from the film RoboCop and created fuzzy, dreamy melodies with blurred female vocals that echoed shoegaze artists.

Did you know? Fact magazine named it the greatest album of the 1990s in 2012.

Wu-Tang Clan · Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)

Wu-Tang Clan's debut came out on Loud Records in November 1993. RZA produced it on a tight budget, building raw beats around soul loops and kung fu film samples, and it introduced nine MCs from Staten Island and Brooklyn.

Did you know? Their deal with Loud Records let each member sign solo deals with other labels, so Method Man went to Def Jam and GZA to Geffen.

Madonna · Confessions on a Dance Floor

Madonna created Confessions on a Dance Floor with producer Stuart Price, designing it as a continuous dance mix. The lead single Hung Up sampled ABBA's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! from 1979, and Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus approved it after Madonna sent them a personal letter.

Did you know? Hung Up topped the charts in 41 countries, becoming one of Madonna's biggest hits.
